Anna Chakvetadze (1) vs Amélie Mauresmo (6)
February 7, 2008
After securing her spot in the quarterfinals on Thursday, Anna Chakvetadze said she was "looking forward to facing Amélie Mauresmo" in the next round. Could she looking to take some revenge after falling to Mauresmo in last year's quarterfinal? In any case, the Russian player is going to get what she asked for.
The former world number 1 only needed ten minutes to secure her spot against the Russian in the quarterfinals. Her opponent Eleni Daniilidou came onto the court looking a bit out of sorts. Running a fever, the Greek player was forced to retire after losing the first 3 games. Amélie will definitely not have such an easy match against Chakvetadze, despite having won all three of their previous encounters. While Mauresmo was sliding in the world rankings last year, the Russian was putting together a sensational year. A semifinalist at last year's US Open and the year end championships, she could complicate things for Mauresmo on her home turf.
